The whole purpose of windows update is to fix problems in the windows software that would allow hostile programs or hackers access to your computer. If you don't put in the updates it makes your computer more vunerable. What you friend may be talking about is that in Windows xp just about all of the updates can be uninstalled. To do this all of the replaced files are archieved in the windows folder so they can be replaced if you want to uninstall the update. Over time and the installation of numerous updates the disk space used does add up. If this is a problem for you, once the update has been installed and you are sure it is working Ok and you would have no reason to uninstall the update, these folders can be deleted or archieved to a CD. If you want to know how to find them and get rid of them let me know. PS Older versions of windows didn't have the ability to uninstall so it didn't happen with them.

One other possibility. Are you sure you have the proper drivers for xp. If the scanner is 6-7 years old, if was made before xp came out and the original installation disk wouldn't have the drivers for xp. I have had problems with drivers for one of my scanners that were preloaded in xp. I had to go to the manufactures website and get updated drivers from them before the scanner would work.

I get my anime online at a site called DVD Planet. They have a 10% to 30% discount on all DVDs and are the cheapest place I know of. They also have free shipping for orders over $25 and no taxes. Last month they had a 50% off special on all DVDs. Another good place for good prices is Amazon.com under the used & new DVD links. I have been able to get several new DVDs for half price. Check them out. Especially if you are paying Best Buy prices.

After the bills most of my money is spent on DVDs, CDs, my computer and books. Used to spend a lot on travel and photography but I don't get the chance so much now.

I always loved math. It helped a lot that it came easy to me and so enjoyed the challenge to figure out the hardest problems. I understand how so many people don't think they will ever use it once they are out of school but you never know. I thought the same thing but I turned out to be wrong. I ended up using my algebra and trig skills for my job.

I buy books, DVDs, and software over the internet all the time.

Yes, Anime is fairly new to me but I have been into sci-fi/fantasy for a long time. I have read just about every book in the series. The books by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman are by far the best though.

To me the main difference is the story line. Cartoons don't hve much of one. The episodes can be seen any any order without any problem. The anime I like tells a story that can draw me in so I want to see that next episode.

I unfortunitely like most of the people who have responded have bad vision so I couldn't become a fighter pilot though I really wanted to. I did get a ride in a T-38 (Trainer version of the F-5 fighter). It was fantastic. All roller coasters are tame after that. Since I can't fly them I fix them in the usaf. That's where I learned most of my computer skills.

I had one at one time but didn't use it much. It wasn't compatible with Windowx XP so when I upgraded I removed it. When I get my next computer I will get one though. I definitely want to get into video editing.

Yes!! I like to fix my own. I always keep parts from old computers when people upgrade or they break and become too expensive to fix. I then use the parts to upgrade other computers. I work on computers for 3 other people. I have fixed both hardware and software for them and get calls ocasionally for help with software problems. Troubleshooting software over the phone can be tricky but I usually can figure out a fix. Using the same software does help a lot.

I guess Im lucky, don't get cold much. Once every year or two. Have allergies real bad though. Have to get shots for them. That's a real pain.

I like to think ahead a bit and when I know I will be needing some blank disks soon I watch what is on sale and can usually find good quality disks for a good price. Cheap quality disks are put on sale more often but if you wait you can catch good quality ones too.

Everyone is trying to help with the recovery of your data. I'm afraid I may not be able to help much with that other that to give you a couple of warnings. Boot sectors are usually fixed by running fdisk.exe from a dos boot disk. The problem with this is a complete format of the disk must be completed next before the disk becomes usable. I would also be worried about a virus or somothing being on the bad drive. If you were just doing normal things and then cycled power and the drive quit working, it doesn't sound like you did anything wrong. Viruses have been known to take out boot sectors.
